Frequently Asked Questions About SEO
On this page we try to answer some of the common questions we get frequently asked about Search Engine Optimisation.
How Long Does SEO Take?
This depends on a number of factors including how old is your domain name and your website? This seems odd but search engines care more for websites that have been around longer. It proves they are not fly-by-night websites that die out after a few months.
There are a number of other issues too, like competition. If your website is about a very popular subject, you will have a lot of competition and it'll be harder to get a good ranking above them. It's not impossible, it just takes longer and a lot more work; but it is possible.
So, it's really not possible to say how long things will take. What you have to accept though is that true SEO is an on-going practice. You can start with basic fixes such as tidying up your code and then keep plugging away using all the methods that we know about.
Are There Any Quick Fixes In SEO?
Yes there are but you don't want to use them because the long term results will be negative. The short term results might seem impressive but the methods and techniques used are aimed at fooling the search engines and when, not if they find you out, your website rankings will drop considerably and there's even the chance you'll get band completely. This actually happened to BMW, so it's not just a threat, it's a reality.
These techniques are called "Black Hat" techniques and are an SEO "no-no". Any company telling you they can get very fast results will most likely be using these methods, so be wary of companies promising fast, top 10 results.
If Our Website Has Been Banned, Can You Undo It?
It is possible to get your site reinstated but a number of things need to be done. First, we have to go through your code and determine what has been done to get you banned in the first place. Once we've found the cause, we have to undo it and notify the search engines what had been done to get you banned, what has been done to remove the Black Hat problem and in some cases notify them of who had done it in the first place. if it's an SEO company, the search engine team could visit that company's website, track their customers and visit their sites to see if they have employed Black Hat techniques too.
Getting unbanned is a lengthy process so it's just not worth opting for quick fixes.
How Do We Know If Black Hat Techniques Are Being Used?
Unfortunately, unless you are an SEO expert, you won't know. You'll probably only know when your site and sales disappear. One day you're on page one or two of Google and sales are good, the next, your site is nowhere to been seen and online sales have stopped. You'll then need to approach a company like ours to determine the problem(s).
The other way to assume these techniques are going to be used is when a company promises you page one rankings within a week or two. If they do that, there's something wrong and you should get another opinion.
Can't We Just Fix Our Meta Tags?
Fixing your META TAGS, such as description and keywords used to work very well. But with so many websites out there, search engines are having to consider many more factors when determining which pages to display in the top positions. Search engines are looking for popular sites with quality content and authoratative information. You need links coming into your site and many other factors need considering.
